Team Terracyren has won the EARTH Studio Student Design Competition organised by the Department of Architecture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
The competition challenged architecture students to develop innovative proposals for the proposed Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) Regional Office in Kumasi, using earth and other locally available materials to create a contemporary building rooted in Ghana’s architectural heritage.
The EARTH Studio gives students an opportunity to explore the relationship between earthen architecture, heritage, climate resilience, sustainability, local materials and contemporary architectural practice.
It also forms part of broader efforts to equip the next generation of architects with the knowledge and skills to design and build with earthen materials and construction techniques.
Team Terracyren emerged winner following final presentations and an assessment of the proposals by a panel, which evaluated the teams’ collective design efforts and responses to the competition brief.
The final presentation brought together students, faculty members, representatives of CRAterre and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, as well as heritage and architectural professionals, providing a platform for critique, dialogue and knowledge exchange.
The competition highlighted the potential of architectural education to connect heritage knowledge and local materials with environmental responsibility and contemporary design, while preparing students to contribute to Ghana’s built heritage and sustainable architectural development.
Congratulations to Team Terracyren and all participating teams for their creativity, hard work and commitment throughout the competition.
